Ireland and Italy played a World Cup qualifier today, and last night Bruce Springsteen performed the final concert ever to be held at Giants Stadium, the edifice in the dirty smelly swamplands of northern New Jersey.
Before that it was U2, who waved goodbye as they exited the stadium One last time. The lads in U2 forgot to mention that in 1994 the World Cup venue hosted the famous Ireland - Italy match.
The New York Times paid tribute recently to soccer matches at Giants Stadium. I agree with most of their top 10 moments, although I would've included this doubleheader in the summer of 1996 featuring the inaugural MLS All-Star game followed by a FIFA World XI playing the star-studded Brazil Olympic team -- which at the time attracted the largest crowd ever at the venue for a sporting event.
