Take a look at what The Strokes' Julian Casablancas points to at the 0:40 mark of this video, directed by Roman Coppola one morning during the summer of 2002:
Yeah, it was that golden moment. I witnessed the end of that Korea/Italy match whilst traveling through Heredia, Costa Rica at the time when hometown boy Pablo Wanchope was all up in it too out in Asia. That's when I knew I had to hustle over to WizKid HQs in lower Manhattan upon return Stateside, and start knockin' on some doors instead of wood.
UPDATE 2014: I was checking out some cheeky clips from Korean TV on YouTube during the World Cup in Brazil, and noticed that the golden goalscorer from that Strokes video, Ahn Jung Hwan, is a guest analyst. At the end of one vid, I noticed a dude in the background wearing a shirt of a particular band:
UPDATE II, 2015: You know that Hollywood actor dude Shia Lebeouf, right? (No relation to Frank the '98 Coupe du Monde winner.) He wore that same exact Strokes shirt throughout 'Transformers'. After getting arrested a couple of times, he recapped the story on a recent Jimmy Kimmel Live episode about drunkenly viewing a South Korea game at a bar during the 2014 World Cup. They were playing "Lithuania or somethin'" (Russia) he says. Some have thought he's alluding to the South Korea vs Lithuania match at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, which took place later that year, but a quick check at the date of his arrest shows it happened on the very day of the soccer game in Brazil. Yeah, it's all very complex. But not as mercurial as the time Shia quoted the great Eric Cantona.
